cosmopolitan Because of the great personalities that had fallen in love with Spetses! We are not being (very) snob, but when Melina Merkouri used to stroll at the pebble-roads, S. Niarchos walked along the promenade, and Od.Elytis was inspired by a summer sunset on the island, then one deserves to be proud of Spetses! Great personalities, great people that were catalytic for our Culture and had international establishment in several fields of civilization, simply showed the way to Spetses. Nowadays, many others have chosen Spetses as their summer place, as they find here what some other cosmopolitan Greek islands can’t offer; the chance to walk around without having to hide behind huge dark glasses and without having to watch out for any paparazzi.

Almond-cakes Because of the traditional Spetsiot Almond-cakes! Tiny bits of almond-pasta, covered in pure seducing caster sugar! Low-fat sweets which you definitely have to carry with you back home! It is a good idea to buy some small packages of almond-sweets (ask for a special wrapping, as you don’t want your suitcases covered by caster sugar!) and give them as a present to your family and friends. The traditional almond-cake is a very good reason to start making frequent trips to Spetses!

Bekiris Cave For the “Bekiris Cave". It’s not any huge or deep cave, but as most things in Spetses, the lack of space and size is overbalanced by the beauty of the scenery! The cave has two entrances, by land and by sea. During the Greek Revolution (19th cent.) it was the secret place were Greeks kept most of their ammunition. Until about 20 years ago it was a winter-shelter for a small group of the Mediterranean Seals. In the early 1970’s, a Greek cinema movie made the cave popular to many Greeks, and established it as the ideal place to begin your love story!

pebble-mosaics For the beautiful and unique pebble-mosaics that are a jewel to the streets and the home-yards of Spetses! With a large variety of naval patterns and symbols, they drift you away to a mystic journey at the grand History of the island! Don’t miss to walk to the pebble-mosaic decorated little plaza in front of the Metropolitan Church of Aghios Nicolas, at the Old Harbour. The patterns there include some figures of the Heroes of the Greek Revolution (back at 1821 A.C.) and they are so vivid that you can’t avoid drifting into a whirlpool of inevitable comparisons… Highlight: trying to walk on the pebbles, wearing that Prada shoes we were talking about…

The pine forest The pine forest of Spetses, which seizes your glance, before even you step on the island! As the boat approaches Spetses, you can’t help looking at the verdurous hillcrest. The picture is rather rare when it comes to Greek islands, and this is the main reason that Spetses was named as “the emerald island”!

cannons around the Main Port of Dapia For the old cannons around the Main Port of Dapia! During the Greek Revolution (early 19th century) the Spetsiots were defending their island by setting many cannons around the Main Port. Nowadays, most of the Old Cannons are still in their place, and some of the most popular cafeterias chose to set their coffee-tables right beside them! Besides the cannons at Dapia, there are quite a few at the sea-font road to the Old Harbour as well as at the Municipal Park. spetses

Main port of Spetses 2 Because you simply do not get stuck on the island, due to bad weather! The coast of Peloponnesos is only 3 minutes away by water-taxi (more expensive, but faster) and less than 15 minutes away by ferryboat or by kaique. From there you can get a taxi (car) or the regular bus and travel to your destination, by land.
5. …and relevant to the previous paragraph, because you easily avoid the unpleasant symptom of being seasick. By choosing the previously described way of traveling to and from Spetses, everything is so much easier! spetses

aerial photo of restaurants located in the "karnagia" traditional shipyards (and getting back to Spetses for good) Because of the historical shipyards located at the Old Harbour, for over 2000 years! Historians say that the ships of the King of Mycenae, Agamemnon, where built in ancient Spetses (Pittioussa). Being even more specific, they point out the area of Spetses where nowadays there is the little chapel of Aghia Marina, and the locals name as “Paradise” spetses
