Because of the opportunity to choose between quiet romantic starry nights and crowded places with loud music! In Spetses, you have the chance to have both, as most of the Music places are located at the Old Harbour, letting the rest of the island to spend quiet summery nights, only with the sound of the sea and the soft breeze over the tree foliage. • cosmopolitan
Because of the great personalities that had fallen in love with Spetses! We are not being (very) snob, but when Melina Merkouri used to stroll at the pebble-roads, S. Niarchos walked along the promenade, and Od.Elytis was inspired by a summer sunset on the island, then one deserves to be proud of Spetses! Great personalities, great people that were catalytic for our Culture and had international establishment in several fields of civilization, simply showed the way to Spetses. Nowadays, many others have chosen Spetses as their summer place, as they find here what some other cosmopolitan Greek islands can’t offer; the chance to walk around without having to hide behind huge dark glasses and without having to watch out for any paparazzi.
  • Horse Buggie
For the traditional Horse Buggies! Just climb on one of them, and let the Carriage driver take you along Spetses! You can even use it as common transportation! It is romantic, it is friendly to environment, it is a traditional thing-to-do and it travels you back in time!
  • Almond-cakes
Because of the traditional Spetsiot Almond-cakes! Tiny bits of almond-pasta, covered in pure seducing caster sugar! Low-fat sweets which you definitely have to carry with you back home! It is a good idea to buy some small packages of almond-sweets (ask for a special wrapping, as you don’t want your suitcases covered by caster sugar!) and give them as a present to your family and friends. The traditional almond-cake is a very good reason to start making frequent trips to Spetses!
  • Natalia the Serene
Because of Natalia the Serene!! Having her metallic body leaned towards the entrance of the Baltiza bay, she waves friendly to any Captain who passes by. Of course, everyone waves back. If you look carefully, with the eyes of your heart, you may see Natalia winking…
  • Bekiris Cave
For the “Bekiris Cave". It’s not any huge or deep cave, but as most things in Spetses, the lack of space and size is overbalanced by the beauty of the scenery! The cave has two entrances, by land and by sea. During the Greek Revolution (19th cent.) it was the secret place were Greeks kept most of their ammunition. Until about 20 years ago it was a winter-shelter for a small group of the Mediterranean Seals. In the early 1970’s, a Greek cinema movie made the cave popular to many Greeks, and established it as the ideal place to begin your love story!
  • pebble-mosaics
For the beautiful and unique pebble-mosaics that are a jewel to the streets and the home-yards of Spetses! With a large variety of naval patterns and symbols, they drift you away to a mystic journey at the grand History of the island! Don’t miss to walk to the pebble-mosaic decorated little plaza in front of the Metropolitan Church of Aghios Nicolas, at the Old Harbour. The patterns there include some figures of the Heroes of the Greek Revolution (back at 1821 A.C.) and they are so vivid that you can’t avoid drifting into a whirlpool of inevitable comparisons… Highlight: trying to walk on the pebbles, wearing that Prada shoes we were talking about…
  • pretty chapel
For the many pretty chapels, everywhere on Spetses, which not only awake our religious feelings, but also grand us with a pure romantic and greek-islandish summery touch! Highlight: The plethora of the Wedding Ceremonies that take place in little sea-side chapels, with the newly-weds escaping by a fish boat while some of the guests watch their brand new Prada shoes covered by sneaky little waves!
  • vrelos
the countless beaches! Just a tiny island, Spetses is… Yet, the curly coasts may offer either the absolute isolation even at the heart of the High Season, or may host large groups of people who celebrate the summer, very loudly!
  • The pine forest
The pine forest of Spetses, which seizes your glance, before even you step on the island! As the boat approaches Spetses, you can’t help looking at the verdurous hillcrest. The picture is rather rare when it comes to Greek islands, and this is the main reason that Spetses was named as “the emerald island”!
